As the owner of Spill the paint,
I have
fulfilled a lifelong dream of creating an
art-friendly environment for children and
adults alike. Everyone should be given the
opportunity to express their inner
creativity in a non-threatening environment
where it is truly "ok" to "spill the paint"!
The idea that art is not just an occupation
for a talented few whose works we admire in
museums has led to the creation of the Spill
the paint art studio - an outlet for all to
express themselves through art and enjoy the
process!

Growing up on Whidbey Island in Washington
State I have always loved art and drawing
has come very naturally to me. In High
School I was encouraged to pursue art by my
teachers due to my natural talents. While
attending Central Washington University I
was again encouraged to pursue art by my
college professor, so I transferred to the
Art Institute of Seattle and completed my
degree in Commercial Art. After completing
my work at the Art Institute, a
representative from Hallmark Cards recruited
me to a freelance position in Kansas City.
Shortly after Hallmark I pursued a job with
a publication company in Kansas City as one
of only two illustrator/designers. In
this role I was responsible for full color
publications covers and spot art. I had a
lot of creative freedom and it was a great
opportunity for growth.
After a few years I missed the Northwest
and being near family, so I returned to
Seattle and took a job with Quality Food
Centers. I was the only illustrator for
their five person advertising department. To my delight it turned out to be a very
creative position. My responsibilities
included product illustrations, marketing
promotions, and private label package
designs. Although we had a great creative
team, I eventually chose to become a stay at
home Mom with three beautiful children.
More recently I have taken colored pencil courses from Teri Hamilton, Anne Kullberg,
and Gary Greene. After falling in love
with colored pencil, I have enjoyed drawing
portraits of children and their pets, as
well as commissioned portraits.
I love working with children of all ages
and believe everyone has a unique way of
expressing themselves through art. I love
to encourage children to see what is unique
about their own work, but also to see the
beauty and uniqueness of the work of those
around them.
Originally from the Netherlands
where she painted custom wall murals, Sylvia loves working with children and
brings 10 years of experience working with different grade levels in the Lake
Washington School District.
I started
drawing in 1996. I used to draw for fun when I was a kid, but didn't take
art in high school or anything like that. I considered majoring in
commercial art when I went to college. However, in my first art class
that I took, the graduate student TA didn't like my drawing and wanted me to
change it to make it look more like hers. I put the pencils down and gave
it up and never tried again for twenty years. I ended up with a degree in
computer science and every time my children asked me to draw something for
them, I would send them to their dad saying that I couldn't draw. I
finally got up enough courage to try again and picked up the book Drawing on
the Right Side of the Brain one day in 1996. That book and the Colored
Pencil Society of America changed my life.

I love to draw and work mostly
with colored pencil. I like colored pencil because I can get an infinite
variety of colors and because I can mix them to create new colors on the paper.
I also like having no mess, no fumes and having a lot of control for detailed
work. Most of my work is done using a layering technique. I love starting with
a blank sheet of paper and watching the appearance of a three dimensional image
evolve from a flat outline on a blank sheet of paper.
